Northfield, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s indoor track and field team scored 94 points to finish fourth at the Kelly Family Meet of the Hearts held Saturday in the Carleton College Recreation Center. Hamline won the six-team meet with 130 points, Carleton took second with 119, and St. Olaf rounded out the top three in third with 114.
Senior Caitlin Fermoyle (Mendota Heights, Minn.) continued her early-season dominance in the 3,000-meter run with a first place finish for the second straight weekend. Fermoyle crossed the finish line with a time of 10:20.79 to win the race by more than four seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Carleton. The senior not only improved on her winning time of 10:28.78 recorded at last Saturday’s Ted Nelson Classic, but she also established a new school record with her performance. Fermoyle’s effort topped the previous program standard of 10:22.38 held by Kourtney Joyce and set in the 2006 season.
Other track competitors posting finishes on the podium included Megan Eckberg (Fy., Gaylord, Minn.) and Ashley Elford (Fy., Red Wing, Minn.). Eckberg crossed the line in 9.18 to place runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles, and Elford took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.57.
The Gusties posted a total of six top three finishes in the field events. Coming off earning MIAC Field Athlete-of-the-Week honors for her school-record tying performance in the weight throw at the Ted Nelson Classic last weekend, Weiers finished runner-up in the weight throw this weekend with a throw of 49-feet 7-inches.
Sarah Swanson (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) rounded out the Black and Gold’s top throwers with a pair of third place showings in the shot put (40’ 1.5”) and weight throw (45’ 6”).
Other top Gustavus competitors in the field events included Kelly O’Neill (Sr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) with a third place mark in the high jump (4’ 6”), and Kelsey Harms (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) with a third place effort in the pole vault (9’ 7”).
The Gustavus indoor track and field teams will get back to work next Saturday, Feb. 21 when they travel to Collegeville, Minnesota for the Saint John’s/Saint Ben’s Quadrangular.
