Gymnastics Posts Best Score Of The Season In 189.025-178.950 Loss To UW-Whitewater Posted on February 7th, 2015 by

The Gustavus gymnastics team scored a season-best 178.950 in Saturday's dual against UW-Whitewater.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus gymnastics team suffered a 178.950-189.025 loss to UW-Whitewater in a dual on Saturday afternoon at the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio. Following what Head Coach Aryn Bell considered a rough showing at the Gershon/McLellan Invitational last weekend in La Crosse, the Gusties bounced back with their best performance of the season this afternoon on their home mats.

“Today was an incredible team performance,” said Bell. “We bounced back from a rough weekend in La Crosse and turned in the highest score in a very long time. Our showing on the floor was what set today’s meet apart. Every floor competitor performed at her best, which was a great way to finish off what was an outstanding meet.”

Today’s score was the best by a Gustavus team since the 2009 season when the Gusties posted a 179.400 at the WIAC Championships on March 7.

“Whitewater is a great team and that definitely raises the level of competitiveness in the gym,” Bell continued. “Before the meet I told them to shine in their new leos and that’s what they did. They were relaxed, focused, and I couldn’t be more proud of their effort. This was sort of a bonus meet so I told them to go out and have fun. They did that and the scores reflected their attitude and focus.”

Gustavus posted individual event scores of 45.475 on the vault, 43.675 on the bars, 43.650 on the beam, and 46.150 on the floor. Coach Bell’s squad’s marks on the bars and floor were both season-bests.

UW-Whitewater went 47.100 on the vault, 46.825 on the bars, 47.400 on the beam, and 47.700 on the floor.

“As a whole, this team is doing what I ask of it and the girls are doing what they need to do on an individual level,” concluded Bell. “We are at the halfway point of the season and I couldn’t be happier with the state of this team. Our goal is to hit a 180.00 and I have little doubt that we are going to achieve that goal. Once again, an outstanding performance from our whole team. We brought great energy to the gym and it was fun to watch us compete.”

The Gustavus will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 when it travels to Winona, Minnesota to take on Winona State University at 6:30 p.m.
