Northfield, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s indoor track and field team began its 2015 campaign with a fourth place finish after scoring 108.5 points at the St. Olaf College Invitational held on Friday at the Tostrud Center. Central College won the meet with a score of 171.50, St. Olaf finished second with a 122, and Bethel rounded out the top three in third with a 115.
Gustavus posted a pair of individual event wins on the track at the season-opening meet. The first came courtesy of Kyle Fredrickson (So., Victoria, Minn.) who won the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:23.18. The other gold medal was delivered by the 4×400-meter relay team comprised of Ed ReMine (So., Mantorville, Minn.), Kyle Fredrickson, David Anderson (So., St. Michael, Minn.), and Sam ReMine (So., Mantorville, Minn.). The group crossed the finish line in 3:30.74 – just .18 seconds ahead of the second place group from Central.
Carston Dammann (So., Lake City, Minn.) turned in the Gusties’ top distance performance with a second place run in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:44.21.
Also on the track, Gustavus benefitted from the third place finishes posted by Daniel Trentacoste (Fr., Orland Park, Ill.) in the 60-meter dash (7.35), Ryley Sandberg (Fr., Alleman, Iowa) in the 800-meter run (2:02.27), and Sean O’Connell (So., St. Peter, Minn.) in the 200-meter run (23.49). O’Connell also added a third place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet 5.75-inches.
Standout Gustie efforts in the field events came from Derek Huntley (So., Maplewood, Minn.) and Jesse Scheiterlein (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) Huntley placed runner-up in the pole vault with a height of 12-feet 10.75-inches, and Scheiterlein took second in the weight throw with a distance of 50-feet 5-inches.
The Gustavus indoor track and field team will be in action next weekend with it travels to the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato to take part in the Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday, Feb. 7.
