St. Paul, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team continued to build upon the momentum it gained from a victory this past Wednesday versus St. Olaf with a 3-0 shutout of Macalester College on Friday evening at Leonard Center. After squeaking by the Oles in five sets, Gustavus handled Macalester much more efficiently, handing the Scots 25-21, 25-14 and 25-19 defeats in consecutive sets. With the victory, Gustavus moves to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC, while Macalester drops to 8-14 overall and 0-6 in the MIAC.

The Scots were able to keep the match interesting, taking early 6-5 and 7-6 leads in both the first and second sets respectively. However, those would be the only leads the Scots would see all evening as Gustavus maintained poise to complete the sweep and extinguish any hope for a Macalester comeback.

Becca Woodstra (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) led Gustavus with 10 kills (.238) on the evening, while teammate Janessa Jahnke (So., Blue Earth, Minn.) was right behind her with eight kills (.375) and three digs.

After a back and forth first set that saw Gustavus trail only once at 7-6, the Gusties began to pull away with leads of 15-11 and 24-19. The Scots made consistent comebacks, including fighting their way back to a tie of 16-16, but eventually fell 25-21 to Gustauvs.

The Gusties didn’t let up from there, keeping their foot on the gas petal en route to a 25-14 second set victory.

Set number three proved to be almost as dominant for Gustavus, as the Gusties jumped out to early leads of 10-3 and 17-8 before eventually putting the Scots away for good with a 25-19 victory in the clinching set.

As a team, Gustavus registered 39 kills with a .165 attack percentage. Macalester finished with 25 kills and a .073 attack percentage.

The Gustie defense also put in a strong effort, with Abby Leitch (Fy., Mankato, Minn.) leading the way with 21 digs and Haley Zweber (So., Rosemount, Minn.) and Marisa Morgan (Fy., Rockford, Ill.) each coming in with eight. Morgan also tallied 27 set assists.

The Gustavus volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Minneapolis for a 7 p.m. match with Augsburg College.
