Volleyball Looks To Build On Momentum Against St. Thomas On Saturday Posted on September 26th, 2014 by

The Gustavus volleyball team will face St. Thomas on Saturday in what is a battle between to clubs with 2-0 league marks.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team puts its unbeaten Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record on the line this Saturday when it hosts the University of St. Thomas at 3:00 p.m. on Gus Young Court.

Gustavus heads into the weekend with an overall record of 7-8 and an MIAC mark of 2-0 after defeating Carleton 3-0 on Wednesday night in Northfield.  The Tommies roll into St. Peter with the best overall record in the league at 12-4 along with an MIAC mark of 2-0 following a 3-0 victory on the road at Macalester on Wednesday night.

The Series…
Saturday’s match will be the 51st meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas in volleyball.  The Tommies hold the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 33-16-1, which includes a 20-match win-streak that dates back to Gustavus’s last win on Sept. 22, 1997.  In last year’s regular season matchup in St. Paul, St. Thomas earned a 3-0 sweep via set scores of 25-24, 25-21, 25-23.

Ones to watch…
Taylor Trautman (So., Hutchinson, Minn.) | Sophomore middle hitter Taylor Trautman recorded a team-high eight kills and a .267 hitting percentage in Gustavus’s sweep of Carleton on Wednesday night.  After averaging 4.4 kills per match through Gustavus’s opening ten contests of the season, Trautman has gradually become a more consistent and prominent threat in the front row.  She has averaged 8.8 kills per match over the squad’s last five outings and now ranks fourth on the team with 88 kills and a .107 hitting percentage.
Jill Greenfield (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) | Senior outside hitter Jill Greenfield finished with 11 kills and a .346 attack percentage on Wednesday night against Macalester.  Greenfield was recently named the MIAC Volleyball Hitter-of-the-Week after racking up 54 kills (3.38 per set), 72 digs, 11 service aces and 10 total blocks in St. Thomas’s five victories the previous week.  She has reached double-digit kills in three straight matches and is now averaging more than three kills per set.

By the numbers…
4 – The number of Gustavus players who have recorded 100 or more digs.  Paige Breneman leads the team with 263 (4.46 dps), Abby Leitch sits second with 153 (3.4 dps), Marisa Morgan ranks third with 132 (2.24 dps), and Sammy Kremer rounds out the group with 114 (2.38 dps).  Gustavus’s 1,002 digs rank fourth in the MIAC.
10 – The number of blocks Gustavus totaled against Carleton – the team’s highest total since recording 13 against Buena Vista on Sept. 12.  The Gusties have reached double-figure blocks four times this season and are 2-2 in those matches.  Both losses came in five-set battles that the Gusties lost the decisive fifth set by the score of 15-13.
