Women’s Cross Country Finishes Sixth At St. Olaf Invitational

Northfield, Minn. – Against its toughest field to date, the Gustavus women’s cross country team turned a team score of 195 to finish sixth overall St. Olaf College Invitational held on Saturday morning. Minnesota-Duluth won the 16-team meet with a team score of 35, while Carleton College finished runner-up with a 51, and St. Olaf rounded out the top three in third with an 86.

Pacing the Gusties at the 6k race was Marit Sonnesyn (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) and Caitlin Fermoyle (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) who both finished inside the top 25. Sonnesyn crossed the finish line in 23:42.6 for a 21st place finish, and Fermoyle crossed in 23:47.6 for a 25th place finish. Lauren Shurson (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.) rounded out Gustavus’s top competitors in 33rd with a time of 24:12.2.

Taking the top two spots on the podium was Minnesota-Duluth’s Samantha Rivard and Breanna Colbenson who posted times of 21:35.6 and 21:51.9, respectively. Deedra Irwin of Michigan Tech finished third with a time of 22:20.5.

The Gustavus cross country teams will have a weekend off before traveling to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 3.
