Women’s Soccer Begins MIAC Play With Match At Carleton Posted on September 17th, 2014 by

Molly Johnston and the Gusties will look to turn things around against Carleton on Wednesday.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team will open conference play on Wednesday afternoon by traveling to Northfield, Minnesota to take on Carleton College at 4 p.m. Gustavus enters the contest with a record of 0-3-1, while Carleton comes in at 3-1-0.

Despite scoring its first goal of the season and tying its season high for shot attempts with 13, the Gusties were defeated by UW-Eau Claire 4-1 in a non-conference matchup this past Saturday in Eau Claire. Gustavus forward Maddison Ackiss (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) scored the Gustie’s first goal of the season when she beat Blugold keeper Sammie Lefaive at the 29:31 mark to cut the lead to 2-1.  UW-Eau Claire responded with a pair of second half goals, both of which by junior forward Tara Dennehy who completed a hat-trick to seal the three-goal victory.

Carleton: The Knights have not competed since Sept. 7 when junior defender Madelaine Horn scored the game-winner in Carleton’s 1-0 victory over Grinnell College in Northfield. After a Grinnell foul, Horn launched a 27-yard free kick into the upper right corner to secure the Knight’s third consecutive victory.

Series History:
Wednesday’s match marks the 40th meeting between Gustavus and Carleton in women’s soccer. The Knights hold the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 19-16-4. In last season’s meeting between the two squads, the Knights outshot the Gusties 24-8 en route to a 2-1 victory in St. Peter.
