Konnor Tranoris and Patrick Roth challenge each other during one-on-one drills Tuesday morning.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team is just three days away from its opening match of the  season and senior captain David Lilly (Maple Grove, Minn.) is excited about the veteran club Gustavus returns to the pitch in 2014.

“We’re ready to get going and the guys are working hard,” said the three-year starting midfielder.  “We have a couple young guys who are looking pretty promising, but overall it’s a veteran squad with a lot of seniors and juniors.  Experience is what this team has going for it, and that’s a good thing when you look at our schedule early in the season.”

The Gustavus men’s soccer team will begin its season on Friday with a total of 19 returning letterwinners off a 2013 club that won the MIAC Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2014 Gustavus Classic will be held on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Gustie Soccer Field.  The tournament will begin on Friday with Concordia College taking on Wartburg College at 12:00 p.m. and Gustavus facing Carroll University at 2:00 p.m.  On Saturday, Carroll will battle Concordia at 12:00 p.m. and Gustavus will go up against Wartburg at 2:00 p.m.
