Men’s Tennis Set To Host Saint John’s In MIAC Playoff Semifinals Posted on May 1st, 2014 by

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s tennis team will face Saint John’s University in the semifinals of the 2014 MIAC Playoffs on Friday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m.  The match is scheduled to be played outdoors on the Brown Outdoor Courts located at the northwest corner of campus.  If inclement weather rears its ugly head, the match will be moved indoors to the adjacent Swanson Tennis Center and will begin within two hours of the original start time. Updates will be made on the Gustavus and MIAC websites if locations and times change.

The Gusties earned the No. 1 overall seed in the MIAC Playoffs after winning their 26th consecutive MIAC regular season title with a perfect 9-0 record in league play.  Since the initiation of the current playoff format in 2007, Gustavus has won the tournament six times (’07, ’08, ’09, ’11, ’12, ’13).  At 26-5 overall, Head Coach Tommy Valentini’s squad heads into postseason play ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 4 in the central region according to the most recent ITA Division III Rankings.

Saint John’s, who entered the MIAC Playoffs as the No. 6 seed, finds itself in the semifinal round after upsetting No. 3 seeded St. Thomas by the score of 5-4 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.  Although the Tommies took two points in doubles, the Johnnies came back with singles wins at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 6 spots.

Gustavus defeated Saint John’s 9-0 in the regular season back on March 22 at Fitness Revolution in Sartell.  Gustavus swept doubles and picked up all six singles wins in straight sets.
