Jordan, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth place with a 932 (+84) after shooting a 310 on the final day of the 2014 Bobby Krig Invitational held on Monday and Tuesday at the Le Sueur Country Club and Ridges at Sand Creek.  Gustie senior Tyler McMorrow (St. Cloud, Minn.) turned in the performance of the tournament, garnering individual medalist honors after shooting a three-round 221 (+9).

“Outstanding effort by Tyler today- he had to battle from start to finish for it,” said Head Coach Scott Moe.  “This was a big win against a great field and that should give him a ton of confidence heading into the finale next weekend at the Saint John’s Spring Invite.”

Saint John’s University won the 15-team tournament with a team score of 917 (+69).  UW-Eau Claire finished runner-up with a 921 (+73), and Minnesota State University, Mankato rounded out the top three in third with a 924 (+76).

Following the opening 27 holes of the tournament, McMorrow led the field of 87 players with a 147 (+7) after shooting a two-over 72 and a five-over 75 at the par-70 Le Sueur Country Club.  The St. Cloud product stayed the course at Ridges at Sand Creek today, firing a two-over 74 to end up nine-over with a 221.  McMorrow sat just one shot ahead of St. Olaf’s Ryan Heide, St. Thomas’s Alex Kapraun, and Saint John’s Casey Vangsness after the first day, and was able to stay ahead of Kapraun to beat the Tommie by just one stroke when all was said and done.

The tournament victory is McMorrow’s first of the season.  He has finished inside the top 10 three times this season and holds a team-best average of 75.5.

Alex Kapraun took second with a 222 (+10), while Eric Hagstrom of UW-Eau Claire filled out the podium in third with a 223 (+10).

Lee Bystrom (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) shot an 80 (+8) this afternoon to finish second on the team and 28th overall with a 237 (+25).  Andrew Brandt (So., Medina, Minn.) carded a 77 (+5) to finish in 35th with a 238 (+26), Andrew Oakes (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) shot a 79 (+7) to take 40th with a 239 (+27), and Matt Jensen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) turned in an 82 (+10) to round out the squad in 58th with a 247 (+35).

The Gustavus men’s golf team will bring the 2013-14 season to a close by taking part in the Saint John’s Spring Invitational set to take place April 26-27.  The tournament will be held at the St. Cloud Country Club on Saturday and the Monticello Country Club on Sunday.
