Men’s Hockey Continues To Climb In National Polls Posted on March 3rd, 2014 by

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team jumped up one place to a No. 12 ranking in the most recent USCHO.com Division III  Men’s Poll released Monday, March 3.  The Gusties also moved up to No. 13 in the D3hockey.com Men’s Top 15 Poll, gaining one spot from it’s previous ranking a week ago.

Gustavus kept its season alive with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Saint John’s University in the MIAC Playoff Semifinals held Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.  Trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, the Gusties tied the game at the 2:29 mark on a power play goal by Tyler Lapic (Jr., New Prague, Minn.).  With the score still tied 2-2 inside the final minute of regulation, Andy Pearson (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) went around a pair of Saint John’s defenders and scored the game-winning goal at the 19:26 mark.

Thanks to their win over the Johnnies, the Gusties secured a place in the MIAC Playoff Championship game for a third straight year and fifth time in the last six seasons.  Gustavus will square off against the University of St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship on Saturday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Mendota Heights, Minn.  The 2013-14 MIAC Champion Tommies earned a trip to the title game thanks to a 2-1 win over St. Olaf in their semifinal contest on Saturday.

St. Thomas moved up to a No. 2 ranking in this week’s USCHO.com poll.  The Tommies are 20-4-2, while Gustavus is 16-6-4.
