St. Paul, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus senior women’s hockey player Melissa Doyle (White Bear Lake, Minn.) played a key role in last weekend’s sweep over Saint Mary’s with three goals and one assist for a total of four points on the weekend. The Gusties defeated the Cardinals 4-3 on Friday night in Winona before cruising to a 5-0 victory on Saturday in St. Peter to remain unbeaten in MIAC play (10-0-0). For her efforts, Doyle has been named the MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.
Doyle began her weekend with a pair of goals on Friday night. In a first period that was anything but spectacular for the Gusties, Melissa scored her team’s lone goal to keep Gustavus in the game and tie the score 1-1. The senior captain scored again in the second period, this time giving the Gusties a 3-2 lead.
She was involved in the offense early again on Saturday afternoon, delivering an assist on the opening goal of the game, which would eventually prove to be the game-winner. Doyle added an insurance goal in the second on the way to the 5-0 win. With points in both games over the weekend, Melissa is now on a three-game point-streak. She currently ranks fifth in the MIAC in goals scored (9), seventh in points (16), and 10th in assists (7).
The Gusties will be back in action this weekend when they take on Saint Benedict in a two-game weekend series. Gustavus will host Saint Ben’s on Friday night at 5:00 p.m., at Don Roberts Ice Rink before traveling to St. Cloud for the second game of the series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
