Men’s Cross Country Places 18th At Jim Drews Invitational

West Salem, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s cross country team turned in a score of 511 to finish in 18th place at the 2013 Jim Drews Invitational held at the Maple Grove Golf Course on Saturday morning.

Winning the meet was St. Olaf College with a score of 41 after placing four individuals inside the top 10.  Host UW-La Crosse finished runner-up (96), and Central College rounded out the podium in third (104).

Joe Renier (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.) and Thomas Knobbe (Fr., West Des Moines, Iowa) led Gustavus individually as the only members of the team to crack the top 100 out of a field of 496 runners.  Renier finished 60th with a time of 26:30.1 and Knobbe ran in 74th with a time of 26:40.9.

Frankline Tonui of Iowa Central won the race with a time of 24:29.0.  Austin O’Brien of Central finished second in 24:48.6, and Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf placed third in 24:53.2.

Today’s meet served as Gustavus’s final competition before the MIAC Championships coming up in two weeks.  The 2013 MIAC Championships will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul.
