Moorhead, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team suffered a 3-2 heartbreaker to Concordia College on Friday night in the Memorial Auditorium.  The two teams traded sets before Concordia sealed the win and kept its MIAC record unblemished with a 15-12 win in the decisive fifth frame.  Gustavus drops to 9-16 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC with the loss, while the Cobbers improve to 16-7 overall and 7-0 in the MIAC with the win.

After Gustavus took the first set by the score of 25-22, Concordia began the back-and-forth with a 25-23 win in the second.  The Gusties won set three 25-20, and the Cobbers responded with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the fifth, Concordia used a four-point run to take a 9-5 advantage.  Trailing 12-8, the Gusties brought the score to within one point at 12-11 after a three point swing.  The Cobbers put the hammer down at that point, winning  three of the next four points to take the match.

The Gusties posted a total of 51 kills and hit at a rate of .116, while Concordia finished with an attack percentage of .158 after recording 57 kills.

Alyssa Taylor (Trimont, Minn.) paced the Gustavus offense with 15 kills to go along with a .106 attack percentage.  After narrowly missing a double-double a multiple occasions, Becca Woodstra (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) registered her first of the season tonight against the Cobbers.  Woodstra tallied 12 kills, 16 digs, and hit at a 23.3-percent clip.

Concordia’s Kyndyl Ross led all front row players with 16 kills and a .244 hitting percentage.

Along with Woodstra’s 16, four other Gusties finished with double-digit digs.  Paige Breneman (Jr., Sherburn, Minn.) led the way with 19, Natalie Watkins (Fy., Alexandria, Minn.) had 13, Kendra Weege (Jr., Watertown, Minn.) had 12, and Haley Zweber (Fy., Rosemount, Minn.) rounded out the group with 10.

Kendra Weege, who was in charge of running the offense, distributed 42 assists for her third double-double of the season.

The Gustavus volleyball team will cap its weekend road trip with a match against The College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon.  The Gusties will travel to St. Joseph, Minn. for a 3:00 p.m. match against the Blazers.
