Sam Falk Garners MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week Honors

St. Paul – One week after winning the College City Classic by seven strokes, Gustavus junior women’s golfer Sam Falk (Jr., Glenwood, Minn.) came back to finish in a tie for second in last weekend’s Gustavus Fall Invitational.  For her efforts, Falk has been named the MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.

Following a weekend in which Falk carded a six-over-par 152 to run away with an individual title, the junior got off to another strong start last Saturday at Le Sueur Country Club with a four-over-par 77 in the opening round.  Her first round score placed her atop the leaderboard along with teammate Mae Meierhenry heading into Sunday’s final round.

Fighting through breezy conditions in the final round at North Links Golf Course in North Mankato, Falk maneuvered her way to a 14-over-par 86 to place her in a tie for second with teammate Lauren Johnson.  For Falk, it was her third top five finish in five events played this fall.  She also ranks fourth in the MIAC with an average of 80.1 strokes per 18 holes.

“Sam has really started to play better the last few weeks,” mentioned Head Coach Scott Me.  “She is starting to prove that she is one of the better players in the region.  Her win at the College City Classic last weekend was a great step in the right direction, beating a very strong field.  She followed that up with a great 77 on Saturday in windy conditions at Le Sueur.  I am excited for Sam and our women’s team as we head into the MIAC Championships this weekend.”

As Moe mentioned, the Gusties will take part in the 2013 MIAC Women’s Golf Championships this coming weekend at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.  The three-day tournament will begin Saturday, Oct. 5th and will conclude on Monday, Oct. 7th.
