Men’s Golf Looks To Repeat Last Season’s Success At Augsburg Invitational This Weekend Posted on September 6th, 2013 by

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team is set to compete in the Augsburg Invitational being held this weekend at the Majestic Oakes Golf Club in Ham Lake, Minn.  The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and then will conclude with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.

The Augsburg Invite will be Gustavus’s first multiple team tournament of the 2013 fall season.  Along with host Augsburg College, teams expected at the meet include the University of Manitoba, Bethel University, Concordia College, Carleton College, Macalester College, Saint Mary’s University, the University of St. Thomas, Saint John’s University, and St. Olaf College.

The 2013 Gusties will look for a repeat performance at this season’s Augsburg Invitational after winning the tournament last year with a two-day team score of 600 (303-297, +24).  Andrew Oakes (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) stole the show last season by taking medalist honors after firing a 73-74-147 (+3) over the weekend.  Alex Kolquist `13 finished runner-up behind Oakes with a 76-72-148 (+4), and Tyler McMorrow (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) also cracked the top 10 with a fifth place finish after shooting a 76-75-151 (+7).

Gustavus kicked off its fall campaign with duals against St. Thomas on Aug. 31 and MSU-Mankato on Sept. 4.  In their most recent outing on Wednesday, Tyler McMorrow led the Gusties to a 284-294 win over the Mavericks at the Le Sueur Country Club after turning in a four-under-par 66.  The senior’s 66 matched his career low round shot on the second day of the Saint John’s Spring Invite back in April of 2012.  Finishing behind McMorrow at the dual was Andrew Oakes and Matt Jensen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) who both finished in a tie for fourth with two-over-par 72s.

Of players who have recorded two rounds this season, McMorrow leads the team with a stroke average of 70 (-2).  Oakes is next in line with a 74 (+3) average, and Lee Bystrom (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) carries a 75 (+4) average.  As a team, Gustavus heads into the weekend averaging a 293.5.

Results for the Augsburg Invitational can be found on the Gustavus Athletics website at the end of each round.
