Women’s Hockey Player Meagan Wanecke Named MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete Of The Week Posted on December 3rd, 2012 by

St. Paul, Minn. – Gustavus women’s hockey player Meagan Wanecke (Sr., Delafield, Wis.) was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women’s Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week following her performance in a weekend sweep over Augsburg.  The senior notched four goals and two assists on the weekend, contributing to six of the eight goals scored by the Gusties in the two wins.  She also recorded the game-winning goal in each contest.

In a 5-0 win on Friday night, Wanecke scored two goals within :15 seconds of each other late in the first period to give the Gusties the spark they needed offensively.  She would go on to contribute two assists in the third period to bring her point total to four on the night.  Saturday’s 3-1 victory saw Wanecke score two more goals, this time in the third period.  Her first turned out to be the game-winner while her second sealed the victory for the Gustie women on an empty net.

Following the six point weekend, Wanecke is now the team leader in goals scored (5), and is tied for the team lead in points scored (7).  She ranks fourth in the MIAC in goals and eighth in the league in points.  She is the first Gustie to score four goals in a weekend series this season after four Gustie women accomplished the feat a year ago.

Gustavus will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8th when it hosts Bethel University in a non-conference match up at Don Roberts Ice Rink.  The opening faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
