Coon Rapids, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team extended its lead at the MIAC Championships following a second round 290 (+2) on Sunday at Bunker Hills Golf Course. The Gusties entered the afternoon with a six-stroke lead over second place Saint John’s and extended that lead to 10 strokes with Sunday’s effort. The final round will be played tomorrow morning at Bunker Hills Golf Course beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Alex Kolquist (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) continued his strong play with the lowest score of the day for the second consecutive round. The senior recorded the best 18-hole total of his career with a five-under-par 67 on Sunday. After building a four-stroke lead yesterday with a three-under-par 69, Kolquist extended his lead to 10 strokes on Sunday. Through two rounds, he has shot an impressive eight-under-par 136.
Tyler McMorrow (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) also turned in a solid performance for the Gustie men on day two. McMorrow combined an even-par 72 on Sunday with a four-over-par 76 on Saturday to bring his tournament total to a four-over-par 148 and place him in a tie for third.
The Gusties have one more member in the top 10 after two rounds. Andrew Oakes (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.) sits in ninth after two days of competition. The junior shot a five-over-par 77 on Sunday to go along with a three-over-par 75 on Saturday, which gives him an eight-over-par 152 for the tournament.
“We’ve put ourselves in a great position heading into the final day,” said head coach Scott Moe. “If the guys stay with the game plan and continue stick with what’s working, it should pretty fun day tomorrow.”
Gustavus will tee off tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at Bunker Hills Golf Course for the final round.
