Coon Rapids, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team is in first place following the opening round of competition at the 2012 MIAC Championships being held this weekend at Bunker Hills Golf Course. The Gusties finished day one with a team score of 300 (+12), leading second place Saint John’s by six strokes (306) and third place Bethel by 11 strokes.
“You have to give a lot of credit to Alex Kolquist for coming out strong and setting a solid tone for the team,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “Andrew and Tyler also played well today and I expect to have a complete team effort tomorrow.”
Alex Kolquist (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) certainly set the tone on Saturday afternoon, recording the lowest round of the day with a three-under-par 69 to put him in first place heading into day two. Andrew Oakes (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.) and Tyler McMorrow (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) are also in striking distance of the leaders after registering scores in the mid-70s. Oakes is in a tie for third place with a 75 (+3), while McMorrow is one of eight players who shoot a 76 (+4) today, sitting in a tie for fifth.
Coby Rowley (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) shot an 80 (+8) and Trevor Gervais (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) shot an 81 (+9) to round out Gustavus’ competitors.
“It’s going to be a battle tomorrow,” said coach Moe. “We know what we have to do and we’ve put ourselves in great position. Now we just have to stay focused and do more of the same on day two.”
Gustavus will be teeing off at 12:40 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Gervais will tee off at 12:40, Rowley at 12:48, McMorrow at 12:56, Oakes at 1:04, and Kolquist at 1:12.
