Sam Falk named MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week

St. Paul, Minn. – After a shooting a career-high 95 on Friday, April 6 in a dual against Flagler College, first-year women’s golfer Sam Falk (Glenwood, Minn.) put her short-term memory to use and bounced back with an outstanding tournament at the Augustana Invitational held over the weekend at the Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D.  Falk led the Gusties to a second place team finish after shooting a two-day total 150 (+6), finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place.  For her performance, Sam Falk has been named this week’s Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.

“Sam is starting to trust her game more and more as the spring progresses.  She made a slight swing adjustment going into the Augustana Tournament and committed to it throughout the weekend.,” said Head Coach Scott Moe.  “She certainly has the capability of firing in the mid-70s every time on the course and will continue to be a leader for us down the line.”

Falk used that slight swing adjustment to set a new 18-hole school record on the opening round of the tournament, shooting a two-under par 70 after a round in which she recorded six birdies.  The Glenwood, Minn. native’s day one score topped Kelli Groff’s 2005 Division III Midwest Classic second round mark of even par 72.  Falk followed her day one score with an 80 (+8) on day two.

Against a field made up of Division II opponents, Gustavus finished in second place after shooting a 36-hole total 620 (+44), recording scores of 310 on back-to-back days.

So far this season, Falk leads the team with a 79.9 average through 15 rounds.

Sam Falk is the second Gustavus women’s golfer to earn MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week honors this season, joining Taylor Drenttel (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) who also took home the distinction last fall on Sept. 20.

The Gustavus women’s golf team will be back on the links next weekend when it travels to Waverly, Iowa to take part in the Wartburg Invitational.  The two-day meet will begin on Saturday, April 21st.

I can’t tell you how proud and astonished with Sam’s play. I used to be a real good player but not that young.
