For his record-setting performance at the Pre-MIAC Meet last weekend, Gustavus junior John Owens has been named MIAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. This is the second time the Brooklyn Park, Minn. native has received the recognition this season.

Owens set the Gustavus and MIAC Indoor record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 16-4.75 feet, well over a foot above the second place competitor and 1.5 inches higher than the previous MIAC record set by St. Thomas’ Matt Schroeder in 2007. The junior vaulter leads the conference field by more than eight inches as Hamline’s Shaise Schuette is second at 15-8.5 feet. Owens was also MIAC Athlete of the Week on Feb. 6 for another school record breaking performance.
