Although the Gustavus gymnastics team recorded its second-straight fourth place finish at a quadrangular, Friday night’s UW-Eau Claire Invite held in Eau Claire, Wis. was a much improved meet for the Gusties. Gustavus totaled 168.800 points, while UW-Eau Claire defended their home mats by taking first with 180.750 points. Winona State placed second with 178.00 and Hamline rounded out the competitors in third with 173.125.
Gustavus tallied individual event scores of 45.975 on the vault, 38.175 on the uneven parallel bars, 41.300 on the balance beam, and 43.350 on the floor exercise.
Sophomore Kacy Lorber (Ashland, Wis.) turned in Gustavus’ top finish of the night, making the podium with a third place finish on the vault after landing a 9.375. Sophomore Jamie Ries (Monticello, Minn.) and junior Bailey Zeinert (Oshkosh, Wis.) also finished inside the top-10 on the vault. Ries placed seventh (9.250) and Zeinert took 10th (9.200).
Junior Samantha Opsahl (Forest Lake, Minn.) had the next best finish behind Lorber, taking fourth on the beam after a 9.150 routine. Opsahl also recorded an 8.875 on the floor, sitting in a three-way tie for ninth place.
Bailey Zeinert was the only all-around competitor for the Gusties, finishing third with a combined 34.725. To go along with her 10th place mark on the vault, Zeinert went seventh on the bars (8.650), 14th on the beam (8.350) and 16th on the floor (8.525).
Courtney Benson of Hamline took the all-around title with a score of 36.075, while Olivia Aschenbrenner of UW-Eau Claire rounded out the top three in second with a score of 35.825.
The Gustie gymnasts will have a short break before hosting UW-Oshkosh in a dual on Jan. 21 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
