Gymnastics Starts Season With Fourth Place Finish At Hamline Invite

The Gustavus gymnastics team compiled 167.600 points to finish in fourth place at the Hamline Quadrangular held Sunday afternoon in St. Paul.  UW-Whitewater won the meet with 180.850 points, while  UW-Stout (176.650) and Hamline (175.850) rounded out the meet in second and third place, respectively.

The Gusties posted individual event scores of 44.875 on the vault, 38.500 on the bars, 39.300 on the beam, and 44.925 on the floor.

Junior Sam Opsahl (Forest Lake, Minn.) turned in Gustavus’ top finish at the meet by placing eighth on the balance beam with a score of 8.475.

Sophomore Jamie Ries (Monticello, Minn.) and Hillary Sabourin (Gatineau, Quebec) also tallied finishes inside the top-10 for the Gusties.  Ries recorded a 9.100 on the vault to place ninth, while Sabourin scored a 9.175 on the floor exercise to also place ninth.

Baily Zeinert (Oshkosh, Wis.) was the only Gustavus gymnast to compete in the all-around, placing 10th after compiling a score of 34.000.  She scored a 9.025 on the vault (13th), 8.750 on the bars (11th), 7.400 on the beam (20th), and an 8.825 (17th) on the floor.

Winning the all-around was Katie Thompson of UW-Whitwater after posting a score of 36.800 and finishing inside the top-three in all events but the beam.

The Gustavus gymnastics team will be back on the mat Jan. 13 when it travels to Eau Claire, Wis. to take part in the UW-Eau Claire Invite.  The meet is set to take place at 6:00 p.m.
