Gustavus Adolphus rookie attacker Zach Brown put his name on the map with tenacious effort and a unique ability to make plays happen inside the box during the first month of the season. For his play, Brown has been named male Student-Athlete of the Month for September by the Office of Sports Information. The Gustavus men’s soccer team went 9-1-0 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC over September, ranking as high as No. 8 in NCAA Division III.
The Eau Claire, Wis. native scored seven goals and tallied three assists for a total of 17 points in September. Brown enjoyed a five-game scoring-streak within the month. He recorded four goals and one assist within the run. The rookie lit up the box score with a pair of two goal games last month, scoring six points (2G, 2A) in a 7-0 win over Clarke College and four points (2G) in a 2-1 overtime win over Saint John’s. Brown scored both the go-ahead goal and overtime game-winner at Collegeville to give the Gusties their second MIAC victory of the year.
“Zach had a tremendous month and is a great impact on our program. He is an outstanding talent – quick, dynamic, clever in possession, competitive, and a good finisher,” said Head Coach Mike Middleton. “His movement is developing all the time, and when he is on the pitch he is a constant threat. Not least, he is a terrific lad as well and very popular in the locker room.”
Within conference play, Brown ranks first in the league in scoring, recording four goals and one assist for nine points. Through 12 matches, Zach leads the Gusties in scoring with 21 points (9G, 3A) and has recorded a team-high 37 shots.
“We cannot guarantee results, especially as we play a top-ranked schedule, but it looks like an exciting future for Gustavus soccer with these lads on board. Its an exciting period.” said Middleton. “Zach is a great credit to himself, his family, and to the college.”
The No. 19 Gustavus men’s soccer team will be back on the pitch for an MIAC matchup against Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
