The Gustavus men’s golf team shot a 292 (+4) on day one of the Augsburg College Fall Invitational on Saturday, finishing the day in second place behind Saint John’s University, currently the leader at 289 (+1). The University of Manitoba rounded out the top-three in third at 295 (+7). The Augsburg Invite is being held at Majestic Oakes Golf Course in Ham Lake, Minn.
Junior Alex Kolquist and sophomore Andrew Oakes both shot an even par 72 for the Gusties, sitting in a tie for fourth place out of 123 golfers heading into day two.
Sophomores Simon Erlandsson and Tyler McMorrow each recorded a score of 74 (+2), which puts them in a tie for 14th place. Fellow sophomore Matt Jensen shot a 78 (+6) and is in 51st place after the first round.
Day one leader Saint John’s has two of its golfers in the top three heading into day two – Casey Vangsness leads the field at three-under-par (69) and Alex Klehr is in third at one-under-par (71).
Gustavus also had a strong showing from its second team. Junior Coby Rowley shot a 74 to match the play of Erlandsson and McMorrow, and sophomore Jon Husu matched Jensen’s round by shooting a 78.
The Gusties will conclude play at the 22-team Augsburg Invite on Sunday, Sept. 11.
