Janey Helland finished fifth in the long jump and sits in third place in the heptathlon after the first day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships, which are being held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Allyson Voss was scheduled to compete in the pole vault, however the event was moved to Friday morning.
Helland started the day competing in four events in the heptathlon. She finished 15th in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.60 and scored 764 points. Next was the 200 meter dash where she finished 14th in a time of 26.52 and scored 752 points, followed by the high jump where she tied for second at a height of 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches scoring 771 points and the shot put where she finished sixth with a distance of 35 feet, 8 inches scoring 587 points. Helland is currently in third place after the first day with a total of 2,874 points. Emma Dewart of Ithaca is in first place with 3,079 points and Kelly Curtis of Springfield is in second place with 2,967 points. The heptathlon will wrap up on Friday with the long jump, the javelin throw and the 800 meter run.
Shortly after completing the first four events of the heptathlon, Helland competed in the long jump where she finished fifth with a career best effort (and new school record) of 18 feet, 9 3/4 inches. As a result of finishing in the top eight, Helland earned All-America honors.
