Four Women’s Tennis Players Named 2011 All-Conference

Four members of the Gustavus women’s tennis team were named to the 2011 All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference singles and doubles teams on Tuesday, May 10. Marianne Barau, Alex Erickson, Sam Frank, and Megan Gaard were named All-Conference in both singles and doubles, while Julie Bardenwerper was named Gustavus’ representative on the 2011 All-Sportsmanship Team.

Four members of the Gustavus women’s tennis team were named to the 2011 All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference singles and doubles teams on Tuesday, May 10.  Marianne Barau, Alex Erickson, Sam Frank, and Megan Gaard were named All-Conference in both singles and doubles, while Julie Bardenwerper was named Gustavus’ representative on the 2011 All-Sportsmanship Team.

Senior Marianne Barau (Sainte Marie, Reunion Island, (France)) earns a spot on the All-MIAC singles team for the third consecutive year.  Barau, who plays primarily at the third spot on the lineup, went 8-0 against MIAC opponents in the regular season.  Barau is 24-4 overall on the season, hitting the 20-win milestone for the third straight year.  In doubles play, Barau teamed up with Alex Erickson to go a perfect 8-0 in the league play, earning a spot on the doubles All-MIAC team for the second time.  Her and Erickson are 15-2 on the season and are currently enjoying a nine-match winning streak.  The senior finishes her career 29-0 in doubles within the MIAC.

Junior Alex Erickson (Minnetonka, Minn.) makes her first appearance on both the All-Conference singles and doubles teams.  Erickson, who is coach Jon Carlson’s #4 singles player, went 9-1 within conference play this season.  She is currently 20-9 overall and is the only Gustie to play in all 10 MIAC singles contests during the regular season.  Erickson accounted for a career high 10-0 record in the MIAC in doubles, going 8-0 with partner Marianne Barau.

Junior Megan Gaard (Edina, Minn.) graces the list of All-Conference performers in singles and doubles for the third consecutive season.  Gaard, who is 20-11 overall, went 9-0 in league play at #2 singles.  She has gone undefeated in MIAC play with 20 or more wins for two straight seasons.  Gaard has hit her stride late in the season and is currently riding an eight-match winning-streak.  In doubles play, she went a perfect 10-0 in the MIAC for the second consecutive season.  The junior is 26-9 overall on the year and 17-5 (8-0 MIAC) when playing with #1 doubles partner Sam Frank.

Senior Sam Frank (Mahtomedi, Minn.) earns All-MIAC singles honors for the third time in her career.  Frank went 8-0 in league play at #1 singles and is currently 23-8 overall this season, earning 20 wins for the first time since her first year.  The senior finishes her four-year career 33-4 in the MIAC.  In doubles, Frank makes the All-Conference team for the fourth time, going 10-0 against the league and is 25-7 overall on the season.  Frank and #1 doubles partner Gaard finished the regular season with an 8-0 mark in conference and 17-5 overall.  She finishes her MIAC career with a 32-3 record in doubles play, while she and Gaard are on a 10-match win-streak.

Senior Julie Bardenwerper (Waunakee, Wis.) was named to the 2011 All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, finishing the season with an 8-5 record overall and a 10-6 mark in doubles.  Within MIAC play, Bardenwerper was 4-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
