Men’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker To Kalamazoo 5-4

The Gustavus men’s tennis team, which was rated #6 in the most recent ITA Central Region poll, lost to Kalamazoo College, which was rated #9 in the region by the score of 5-4 in Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson picked up wins in both singles and doubles against Kalamazoo.

The Gustavus men’s tennis team, which was rated #6 in the most recent ITA Central Region poll, lost to Kalamazoo College, which was rated #9 in the region by the score of 5-4 in Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon.  The Gusties, who are now 13-8 overall, led 2-1 after doubles, but dropped four of the six singles matches, which allowed Kalamazoo to win the important regional matchup.  The match lasted over five hours and five of the six singles matches were decided in three sets.

Gustavus picked up its points at #2 doubles where Tyler Johnson and Juan Luis Chu defeated Clay Bartelt and Steve Hanselman 8-6, #3 doubles where Marcel Gyswyt and Joey MacGibbon knocked off Alex Dombos and Tom Cafmeyer 8-6, #4 singles where Johnson defeated Cafmeyer 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 an #6 singles where Joey MacGibbon defeated Mike Korn 7-5, 7-6 (3).

The Gusties will now face Concordia in Fargo, N.D. on Thursday at 1:30 pm.
