The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its 2012 Men’s Tennis Awards on Tuesday and three Gustavus players garnered All-Conference in both singles and doubles. Junior Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.) and sophomores Juan Luis Chu (Lima, Peru) and Mya Smith-Dennis (Savage, Minn.) were selected by a vote of the league’s coaches as representatives on the 2012 All-MIAC singles and doubles teams.
Gustavus sophomore Joey MacGibbon has been named MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week for his contributions to Gustavus’ MIAC Playoff title this past weekend. The Gusties defeated St. Thomas in the semifinals 5-1 and Carleton in the championship match 5-0, and MacGibbon claimed two victories at No. 3 doubles and one at No. 5 singles.
The Gustavus men's tennis team earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship by winning the 2012 MIAC Playoff Title with impressive wins over St. Thomas, 5-1 in the semifinals, and Carleton, 5-0 in the championship match on Saturday night in St. Peter, Minn.
