The Gustavus Student Athlete Advisory Board will be collecting non-perishable food and cash donations at the entrance to all Gustie athletics events this weekend to support the local St. Peter Food Shelf. Gustavus women’s hockey will play at home on Friday night, followed by men’s and women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon and men’s hockey on Saturday night.
This gathering of food items is part of the campus-wide event – Good Food for All: A Food Security Event Building Solidarity Through Education, Action, and Advocacy, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 12–13. Gustavus and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will partner to host this event to give the community the opportunity to deepen its understanding of food insecurity, and to consider the challenges the local and global community faces in alleviating hunger.
The St. Peter Food Shelf is a non-profit organization, which has helped the St. Peter community for over 30 years. Director Nancy Helgeson is grateful for the continued support from the community both in the gifts of money and food as well as the wealth of volunteers that help stack the shelves and distribute the food. Those who are interested in volunteering or donating can call Helgeson directly at 931-1303. Those who may be in need of food can call the Nicollet County Human Services Office at 931-6800 to make an appointment for food pickup.
