Molly Mathiowetz named MIAC Player of the Week

Gustavus senior post Molly Mathiowetz (Sleepy Eye, Minn.) earned MIAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for her outstanding play last week.  She led the Gusties while averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 82.1 percent from the field to help the Gusties win three important road games during the week.  Mathiowetz, who made 23-of-28 shots from the field (82.1%) and 7-of-10 from the free throw line (70.0%), contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds in the 91-70 win at Augsburg, followed by a 12 point, 6 rebound performance in a 77-64 win against third place Bethel in Arden Hills, and then wrapped up the week with 19 points and three rebounds in a 64-49 win at Saint Mary’s.  Mathiowetz missed only five shots in 28 attempts during the week including 10-of-11 against Augsburg, 5-of-7 against Bethel, and 8-of-10 against Saint Mary’s.

She leads the MIAC in field goal percentage at 60.2 percent (68-113), and ranks 12th in Division III at 58.3 percent.  Mathiowetz needs just 63 points to become the 10th player in the history of the Gustavus women’s basketball program to score 1,000 career points.  The Gusties are currently 9-7 overall and in fourth place in the MIAC with a record of 8-5.
