The Gustavus volleyball team dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Bethel University 3-1 on Wednesday night in Arden Hills. The set scores were 16-25, 18-25, 25-23, 12-25. First year outside hitter Dana Boerboom led the Gusties with 16 kills.
Gustavus got off to a slow start in the match losing the first two sets 16-25 and 18-25. Coach Rachelle Dosch’s squad struggled on the attack in the second set in particular with 9 kills and 9 errors in 35 attempts for a .000 attack percentage.
The Gusties bounced back in the third set jumping out to a 7-2 lead and then maintaining a 5-point lead through much of the set. The Royals made a late charge, but it was too little, too late as Gustavus held on for the 25-23 win.
In the fourth and final set, the Gusties stayed close early and trailed 11-8 after a kill by Angela Ahrendt, but the Royals outscored Gustavus 14-4 the rest of the way to win 25-12 and close out the match.
Gustavus will wrap up its 2010 season with a match at Saint Mary’s on Saturday at 3 pm.
