First year forward Amanda Cartony traps the ball in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Hamline

The Gustavus women’s soccer team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 3-0 victory over Hamline on a cold, rainy, and windy Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.  Ashley Anderson, Nicole Kwapick, and Amanda Cartony all scored a goal on the way to Gustavus’s second MIAC victory of the season.  With the win, Gustavus improves to 2-8 in the MIAC and 6-11 overall, while Hamline falls to 0-10 in the MIAC and 5-12 overall.

Senior attacker Ashley Anderson got Gusties out to an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the seventh minute of the match.  Anderson now has nine goals and five assists for a team-high 23 points this season.  With the goal, Anderson moves into a tie for 10th place with Barb Jaeger ‘88 in career goals scored at Gustavus with 23.  She also moves into sole possession of 11th place in career points with 55, moving ahead of Katie Ryerse ‘99 (53 pts) and behind Amy Larson ’07 (56 pts).

Fellow senior Nicole Kwapick extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 19th minute, her second of the season.  The Gusties peppered Hamline goalminder Molly Jacobs with eight shots in the first half, while Chelsea Bayer made just one save on one Hamline shot within the frame.

First year forward Amanda Cartony extended the lead to 3-0 with her eighth goal of the season in the 86th minute.  Karen Maus was credited with the dime on the goal, her fourth of the season.  The Gusties kept the pressure on in the second half, outshooting Hamline 7-to-2.

Meghan Faricy nearly nets a ball in a scramble in front of the Hamline goal.

Chelsea Bayer was credited with her sixth win and fifth shutout of the season.  She stopped two Hamline shots in a complete game performance.  Molly Jacobs suffered the loss in nets, allowing three goals and making five saves.  Gustavus out-shot Hamline 15-3 in the match, the largest shot total the Gusties have recorded within MIAC play this season.

“We told the ladies at the start that in a game like this we are not playing to see who is better, we play to see who has more guts,” said Head Coach Mike Stehlik.  “Besides, we didn’t think the heavy stuff was going to come down for quite some time.”

The Gustavus women’s soccer team will play host to Augsburg for the season finale on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.  Seniors Chelsea Bayer, Mackenzie Del Santro, Ashley Anderson, Nicole Kwapick, Abbey Maus, Karen Maus, and Meghan Faricy will be honored for their contribution to the Gustavus women’s soccer program as the match is designated as Senior Day.
