Three Gusties Named To Softball All-Tournament Team

The 12-player Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team for the 2010 MIAC Softball Playoffs was announced on Monday following the weekend’s competition. Making the team from Gustavus is Betsie Collins, Emily Wendorff, and Lisa Klass.

The 12-player Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team for the 2010 MIAC Softball Playoffs was announced on Monday following the weekend’s competition. Leading the list of award winners was MIAC Tournament MVP Marta Radcliffe from St. Thomas.

Three Gustavus players were named to the All-Tournament team.  They included senior pitcher Betsie Collins (Waseca, Minn.), junior outfielder Emily Wendorff (Prior Lake, Minn.), and sophomore second baseman Lisa Klass (Richield, Minn.).  The Gusties posted a record of 2-2 in the tournament falling to St. Thomas in the title game.

Klass, a sophomore second baseman, was 5-for-13 at the plate with four runs scored and one RBI.  She hit a solo home run in the 4-2 loss to Bethel.  Wendorff, a junior left fielder, was 5-for-12 at the plate with one run scored and four RBI.  She drove in two runs with a clutch double in the Gusties 8-0 win over Bethel.  Collins, a senior pitcher, posted a record of 2-1 with four appearances in the tournament.  She scattered seven hits and allowed two runs with eight strikeouts in the win over St. Olaf and then allowed just two hits while striking out seven in the 8-0 win over Bethel.

St. Thomas won the double-elimination tournament held May 8-9 at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Minn. The Tommies defeated Gustavus 4-0 in the final game to finish the playoffs 3-0 and win their seventh consecutive playoff title. With the win, St. Thomas earned the MIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
