The Gustavus softball team increased its win streak to four games by sweeping #20 UW-La Crosse by the scores of 2-0 and 5-2 in La Crosse, Wis. on Thursday afternoon. Callie Nelsen tossed a complete game shutout in game one, while Betsie Collins scattered three hits and allowed two runs in picking up the win on the mound in game two. Jesse Pelzel was the hitting star in game one with two hits in three at-bats with two RBI, while Andrea Brown drove in the winning run with one out in the top of the seventh inning in game two.
In the first game, the Gusties scored twice in the top of the seventh inning for the dramatic win. Andrea Brown drove in pinch runner Amy Lynch with a sacrifice fly and then MacKenzie Dalton gave the Gusties an insurance run when she drove in Emily Wendorff with a two-out single. Callie Nelsen no-hit the Eagles for four innings before allowing two hits in the fifth and one in the sixth. Nelsen threw seven strong innings for the Gusties
In the second game, Emily Wendorff and Jesse Pelzel both registered two hits, while Pelzel added two RBI. The Gusties scored three times in the second inning as Andrea Brown, Jesse Pelzel and Lisa Klass drove in runs with clutch hits. Gustavus extended its lead to 4-0 when Kirsten Prunty scored in the fourth inning. Carrie Johnson scored the final run for Gustavus in the top of the sixth inning when she crossed the plate after a double by Jenny Ewert. Betsie Collins did not allow a hit through five innings and ended up scattering three hits and two earned runs through seven solid innings.
