Molly Mathiowetz named Co-MIAC women's basketball player of the week

Gustavus junior post Molly Mathiowetz (Sleepy Eye, Minn.) has been named Co-MIAC women’s basketball player of the week (Jan. 11-17) along with Shannon Renne of Augsburg College.  The Sleepy Eye native helped the Gusties post a 2-0 record last week with victories coming over the University of St. Thomas (77-63) Wednesday night in St. Paul, Minn. and Bethel University (60-53) Saturday afternoon in Arden Hills, Minn.

Mathiowetz averaged 20 points per game in that span with a game-high 22 points against St. Thomas and a team-high 18 points against Bethel.  Her defense was key in both games as she recorded four steals and two blocks against St. Thomas while posting a game-high six steals against Bethel.  Mathiowetz’s 22 points against St. Thomas was a career high as she shot 67% (8-12) from the field and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

The Gustie women travel to Northfield, Minn. on Wednesday night to face Carleton.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
