The Gustavus men’s hockey team jumped out to a 3-1 lead and then held on for a 3-2 win over previously unbeaten UW-River Falls in River Falls on Friday night. Senior captain Cody Mosbeck scored the gamewinner for the Gusties, while Josh Swartout picked up the win in the nets.

The Gusties came out sharp in the first period and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Eric Bigham at the 12:36 mark.  Joel Jonsson was credited with the assist.  UW-River Falls tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Andy Inderieden at the 18:21 mark and then Jared Ackmann put the Gusties out in front again with a goal in the final 30 seconds of the first period. Gustavus, which led 2-1 after the first 20 minutes, out-shot the Falcons 17-4.

Only one goal was scored in the second period, but it was an important one for the Gusties as Cody Mosbeck scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 15:22 with an assist from Jamie Leathers.

Gustavus maintained its 3-1 lead until late in the third period when Justin Brossman scored for UW-River Falls with just under three minutes remaining in the game to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Gusties held off the Falcons down the stretch to claim the 3-2 victory.

Josh Swartout registered 17 saves in the nets for Gustavus.

The Gusties will play at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.  GAme time is 7:05 pm.
