The Gustavus women’s gymnastics team began the 2009 season with a 171.225 to 176.925 loss to Winona State University in Winona on Thursday night. Seniors Christine Askham and Jennifer Berglund turned in the highest score among the Gusties with a score of 9.100 on floor exercise. Senior Laura Hansen had the top finish posting a score of 8.975 for second place on the uneven parallel bars. Askham also finished second in the all-around competition tallying 34.675 points.

Gustavus recorded its top team score on floor exercise with a score of 44.975. Askham and Berglund led the way with identical 9.100 scores followed closely by seniors Catherine Osterhaus and Jamie Tsurusaki with scores of 9.050 and 9.025, respectively. Other team event totals for the Gusties included a score of 40.575 on the uneven bars, 41.950 on the balance beam, and 43.725 on the vault. Top performers on each apparatus included Hansen with a total of 8.975 on the uneven bars, first-year Breann Moore with a score of 8.975 on the vault, and Tsurusaki with a score of 8.700 on the beam.

Gustavus will host a triangular meet against UW-Whitewater and Hamline on Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lund Center Forum.
