Men’s Basketball Suffers Disappointing 102-79 Loss To University of Puget Sound Posted on December 28th, 2008 by

The Gustavus men’s basketball team lost to the University of Puget Sound 102-79 at the Ameriprise Whitworth Classic on Sunday. The tournament is being played at Burlingame High School near San Francisco, California. The Gusties, who fell to 3-4 overall, got off to a slow start and trailed 56-38 at the half. Gustavus cut the lead to 13 points midway through the second half, but Puget Sound used a 10-2 run to build its lead back to 20 points and the Loggers cruised to the 23-point victory. The Gusties struggled to handle Puget Sound’s full-court pressure as they committed 28 turnovers, which led to 22 fastbreak points for the Loggers. Gustavus was led in scoring by Robbie Schmidt with 15 points. Mychal Crowder was the only other Gustie in double figures with a career-high 11 points.

The 102 points are the most points allowed by the Gusties in 14 years (a 128-102 win over St. Olaf in Northfield). It is also only the second time the Gusties have allowed an opponent to reach the century mark in the past 10 years. The other time was a 100-66 loss to Saint John’s in January of 2007.

Gustavus will face #19 Whitworth University on Monday at 4:00 pm (CST).
