Men’s Swimming and Diving Team Finishes First at Saint John’s Triangular, Matt Stewart Wins Three Events Posted on November 24th, 2008 by

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving squad finished first at the Saint John’s Triangular on Saturday with a total of 1255.5 points. South Dakota State University finished second with 831.5 points, followed by host Saint John’s in third with 665 points. The Gusties won seven of the 17 events, while also recording five second and seven third place finishes. Matt Stewart sparked the Gusties with three first place finishes including the 200 fly (1:56.85), the 200 free (1:45.25), and the 500 free (4:49.67).

Other first place finishers for Gustavus included Paul Kirahara in the 100 yard backstroke (54.52), Tyler Wakefield in the 100-yard freestyle (49.47), the 200 medley relay team of Kirihara, William Schultze, Stewart, and Wakefield (1:38.95), and the 200 free relay team of Wakefield, Clem Aeyung, Dave Pearson, and Schultze (1:27.1).

The five second place finishers included Skylar Davis in the 200 free (1:47.16), the 1000 free (9:43.96), and the 500 free (4:49.68), Schultze in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.75), and Kirihara in the 200 back (2:01.39). Third place finishers included Dave Pearson in the 200 individual medley (2:03.26), the 50 free (22.54), and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.90), Whitaker Davis in the 1000 free (10:03.57), and the 500 free (4:59.57), Schultze in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.52), and Josh Seaburg in the 200 butterfly (2:03.05).

The Gusties next meet will Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6 at the Falcon Invitational. The meet will take place at the University of Minnesota.
