Gusties Explode For Eight Goals In Win Over Buena Vista Posted on October 26th, 2008 by

The Gustavus women’s soccer team exploded for eight goals, five in the second half, en route to an 8-0 win over the Beavers from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa Sunday afternoon. Senior Ashley Voigtlander scored the winning goal just 62 seconds into the match and Ashley Ohlson got the shutout in goal for the Gusties. Gustavus improves its season record to 7-7-3, while Buena Vista drops to 2-15-0 on the season.

The Gusties got goals from six different players, while nine players recorded a point in the match that saw Gustavus out shoot the Beavers 26-5. Ashley Voigtlander got Gustavus on the board 62 seconds into the match with her second goal of the season. 19 minutes later, Voigtlander struck again when she got a pass from fellow senior Christy Tupy and beat Buena Vista’s goalkeeper Justine McGarvey for a 2-0 Gustavus lead. Sophomore Ashley Anderson gave the Gusties a three-goal lead in the 31st minute with her fourth goal of the season.

Junior Chelsea Craven kept the Gustavus attack rolling in the second half with her team-leading seventh and eighth goals of the season. The goals came in the 56th minute and were separated by only 34 seconds. Voigltander registered the assist on Craven’s first goal, giving her five points in the match. In the last 20 minutes of the match, sophomore Nicole Kwapick and juniors Chelsey Cook and Rachel Iblings each tallied their first goals of the 2008 season.

Senior Ashley Ohlson recorded her sixth shutout of the season while making one save. For Buena Vista, sophomore goalkeeper Justine McGarvey made ten saves in the loss.

Gustavus will close out its 2008 campaign with a conference road contest next Saturday, November 1, at the University of St. Thomas. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
