The Gustavus men’s soccer team saw their hopes for a regular season conference title take a big hit with a disappointing 1-0 loss at St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon. The Oles got the lone goal of the game in the fifth minute from Nate Swenson. The Gusties out-shot the Oles 17-11 and held a 8-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
The Gusties just missed tying the match in the final minute of play when Mark Adams hit the crossbar with a shot, however the rebound was cleared by the Oles and time ran out on Gustavus.
Luke Strom, who suffered the loss in goal for Gustavus, made three saves.
The loss dropped the Gusties into a tie for second place in the MIAC with Augsburg at 6-2-0. Carleton is currently in first place with a mark of 7-1-1. Prior to the loss to St. Olaf, Gustavus controlled its own destiny in its quest to claim its fifth consecutive conference title. The Gusties will now need to win their final two league matches against Macalester and St. Thomas and hope that Carleton would tie or lose its final league match against St. Olaf.
Gustavus is currently 10-4-1 overall and 6-2-0 in MIAC play.
