The Gustavus men’s soccer moved to 2-0-0 in MIAC with an important 3-0 win over Saint John’s at the Gustavus Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Bret VanderStreek and then added two more goals in the second half, one each from Mark Adams and Ben Ikeda. Gustavus, which has won four straight, is now 5-1-0 overall.
The Gusties took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Fraser Horton sent a long cross from the left side of the field that Brett VanderStreek knocked down and then slipped a shot over the outstretched arms of Johnnie goalkeeper Luke Nelson and into the net. Gustavus led 1-0 at the half.
The Gusties extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half when Mark Adams one touched a sharp pass from Skylar Schulz into a wide open net in the 49th minute. Schulz had taken a corner kick, which was deflected by a Johnnie defender. He then picked up the deflection and took the ball hard up the end line toward the goal where he sent a sharp pass through the goal mouth to a waiting Adams who re-directed the pass into an open net.
Gustavus closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when Ben Ikeda picked up a ball that slipped out of the hands of Johnnie goalkeeper Luke Nelson three yards in front of the net and casually poked it into the net.
The Gusties held a 16-3 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Luke Strom made two saves and picked up the shutout in the nets for Gustavus.
