A combination of pitching and offense helped the Gustavus softball team finish its’ week at the Tucson Invitational undefeated after defeating the University of Chicago 5-1 and Lawrence University 13-9. After losing the first two games of the season, head coach Jeff Annis and the Golden Gusties have won ten straight games to bring their overall record to 10-2. Gustavus is scheduled to begin MIAC play with a doubleheader against Macalester on Sunday at 1 p.m. in St. Peter.
Betsie Collins pitched a complete games in a 5-1 decision over the University of Chicago to earn the win for Gustavus. Collins threw five strikeouts and two walks and allowed four hits and one run. Andrea Brown went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run and driving in one RBI. Jenny Ewert contributed two RBI and scored a run as she went 2-for-3.
The Gustie offense came through in a 13-9 win against Lawrence University. A group of Gustie pitchers threw during the game as Erin Truebenbach pitched the first three innings, Leigh Weber pitched the following 1.2 innings, and Callie Nelsen threw the last 2.1 innings. Leigh Weber drove in three runs as she hit 3-for-4 3. Julie Mahre and Mackenzie Weber each went 2-for-3 as Mahre also scored three runs. Shelia Arnold was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate.
