The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team continued to compete well in 2008 with a 175-124 win over Carleton in Northfield on Saturday. The Golden Gusties won nine events and finished second in nine events as well. Of those events, Coach Carlson’s squad claimed first and second place in five events, including the 200 butterfly, the 50 freeestyle, the 100 freestyle, the 200 backstroke, and the 200 IM. Connor Ziegler was the only multiple event winner, male or female, for Gustavus. Ziegler (Sr., Sauk Rapids, Minn.) brought home first-place in the 100 butterfly (53.13) and 200 butterfly (2:01.27).
First-place finishes were turned in by Clem Auyeung (Jr., North Mankato, Minn.) in the 50 freestyle (22.10), Matt Stewart (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) in the 200 freestyle (1:48.33), and Tyler Wakefield (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) in the 100 freestyle (48.76). The following swimmers also touched the wall first for Gustavus: Greg Pokorski (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) in the 200 backstroke (2:02.88), Dan Mikkelson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.81), and Dave Pearson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) in the 200 IM (2:04.20). The 200 freestyle relay also captured first-place in 1:29.02. Members of team included Craig Nordquist (Fy., Plymouth, Minn.), Sam DeFranco (Fy., Andover, Minn.), Auyeung, and Wakefield.
Gustavus will host the Gustavus Invitational on Saturday, February 2 in Lund Natatorium at 10 a.m. This will be the last competition for the team before preparing for the MIAC championships on February 14-16.
