The Gustavus women’s soccer team improved its record to 6-5-0 on the season with an impressive 5-0 win over Buena Vista University at the Gustavus Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. Five different players scored for Gustavus including Jenna Iaizzo, Kristy Tupy, Julien Babel, Ashley Anderson, and Amy Kunkel. Ashley Ohlson and Chelsea Bayer shared the shutout in goal for the Gusties.

The Gusties opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Ashley Voigtlander sent a touch pass across the box to Jenna Iaizzo who one timed a shot on the ground past the Buena Vista goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. Kristy Tupy made the score 2-0 in favor of Gustavus when she took a through ball from Ashley Anderson and drove it to the Beavers goal at the 44:28 mark. Gustavus out-shot Buena Vista 24-2 in the first half.

The Gusties continued to roll in the second half scoring three more goals to make the final score 5-0. Julien Babel scored off a corner kick from Rachel Iblings in the 55th minute, Ashley Anderson scoring off a scramble in front of the net in the 68th minute and Amy Kunkel scoring off a cross from Karen Maus in the 87th minute.

Coach Mike Stehlik’s squad peppered Buena Vista goalkeepers Amber Barnes and Shannon Farrier with 46 shots on the game which is the most shots that Gustavus has put on goal since Sept. 1, 1998 when the Gusties recorded 68 shots in a 6-0 win over Concordia (Wis.). The five goals are the most scored by a Gustavus women’s soccer team since an 8-0 win over Bethel on Oct. 14, 2003.

Ashley Ohlson played the first half in goal for Gustavus making one save. Chelsea Bayer played the second half in goal making also making one save. The two shared the shutout, while Ohlson was credited with win as the starting goalkeeper.

The Gusties next match will be Saturday, Oct. 6 at Hamline. Game time is 1:00 pm.
