The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s track and field team opened its outdoor season Friday, April 6 with a fourth-place finish at the Central (Iowa) Invitational in Pella, Iowa. Hastings College scored 174 points to run away with the team title, followed by Iowa Central Community College (118), host Central (89), and Gustavus (80.5).

Alex Zupan (Sr., Monona, Wis./Monona Grove) posted a pair of wins on the day, taking titles in the 1500-meter run and the 5000. Zupan won the 1500 in a time of 4:13.09 and crossed the line in the 5000 with a 16:01.08 clocking. John Leaf (So., Center City, Minn./Chisago Lakes) finished second in the 5000 with a time of 16:21.37. Tanner Miest (Sr., Willmar, Minn./New London-Spicer) won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.20 seconds to claim the other victory by the Gustavus men on the day.

Cole Carlson (Fr., Mora, Minn.) and Adam Caulfield (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) each picked up points in the sprints for Gustavus. Carlson finished second in the 400 (52.20) and sixth in the 200 (23.13), while Caulfield took fifth in the 400 (53.45) and tied for eighth in the 200 (23.43). Chris Ward (Sr., Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) added an eighth place finish in the 800 (2:06.09) to round out the Gustavus effort on the track.

The Gustavus effort in the throwing events was paced by seniors Andy Klaers (Loretto, Minn./Delano) and Luke Weyandt (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and freshman Brian Anderson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy). Klaers took second in the discus (154-0) and fifth in the shot put (42-9), but was unable to record a distance in the hammer throw. Weyandt took second in the javelin throw (152-3), ninth in the discus (134-11) and tenth in the shot put (40-10 1/4). Anderson added a third place finish in the javelin (146-06).

Gustavus will continue its outdoor season Saturday, April 14, when it hosts the Lee Krough Invitational.
