Men’s Swimming and Diving Team In Fifth Place After First Day of NCAA Championships

The Gustavus men’s swimming team is in fifth place after the first day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships which are being held at the University of Houston. Kenyon College of Gambier, Ohio is in first place with 154 points. The Gusties scored 80 points and trail fourth place Johns Hopkins (82) by two points.

Sophomore Matt Stewart turned in the top performance of the day as he finished third in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.08. Teammates Skylar Davis and Ben Hanson finished 14th and 16th, respectively.

Senior Brian Amundson posted a sixth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.62. Scott Hagemeyer placed ninth in a time of 20.68.

The 200 free relay team of Amundson, Hagemeyer, Hanson, and Stewart finished sixth in a time of 1:22.68, while the 400 medley relay team of Hagemeyer, Dan Mikkelson, Conner Ziegler, and Amundson placed 11th with a time of 3:27.12.

Stewart, Amundson, and the members of the 200 free relay team all earned All-America honors by virtue of finishing in the top eight at the national meet.

The championships continue on Friday with prelims beginning at 10 am. The finals will begin at 6 pm.
