Men’s Swimming In First Place After First Day of UW-Stevens Point Invitational Posted on January 19th, 2007 by

The Gustavus men’s swimming team is in first place after the first day of the UW-Stevens Point Invitational. The Gusties were led by sophomore Matt Stewart who picked up first place finishes in the 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. The meet will conclude on Saturday afternoon.

The Gusties totalled 425 points on the day to finish 25.5 points ahead of UW-La Crosse with 399.5. Other scores in the six team meet included host UW-Stevens Point with 383.5, St. Olaf with 379.5, MSU, Mankato with 234.5, and the Univ. of North Dakota with 65.

Stewart had a big day for Gustavus as he finished atop a very competitive field in both the 500 free and 200 fly. Stewart recorded a time of 4:41.28 in the 500 free and time of 1:54.51 in the 200 fly. His 200 fly time met the Division III B Standard.

The 800 free relay team also posted a first place finish for Gustavus.

Other top finishes included Scott Hagemeyer finishing third in the 100 backstroke (55.02) and fifth in the 100 free (48.49), Brian Amundson finishing third in the 100 free (48.17), and Billy Cuevas finishing fourth in the 200 fly (2:01.77).
