The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team finds itself in a tie for second place following day one of the 2006 MIAC Men’s Golf Championships. Gustavus and Augsburg each posted team scores of 303, nine shots back of defending champion Saint John’s, which currently has four players in the top nine.

Joe Schoolmeesters of Saint John’s leads the medalist race after day one after shooting a 1-under-par 71 on the par-72, 6901-yard layout at Bunker Hills G.C. in Coon Rapids. A pack of four players, including Gustavus’ Erik Tone (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) and Eric Harris (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), sit second, just two shots back after first-round 73s. Jordan Hawkinson (Jr., Lindstrom, Minn.) is tied for tenth place after firing a 76, while Mark Stuckey (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) carded an 81 and Arie DeGrio (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) followed with an 85.

Play continues Sunday and Monday at Bunker Hills with 18 holes each day to decide the MIAC’s automatic qualifier for the 2007 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships.
